Aira stretches along the innermost shore of Kagoshima Bay, the northern end of the bay that holds Sakurajima. On the map the coastline forms a smooth southern edge, the main town and rail line follow the flat land behind it, and rivers descend from the hills to the north through valleys filled with farmland and smaller settlements.
The present city was formed in 2010 by merging the towns of Kajiki, Aira and Kamo. The northern part of the bay is the Aira Caldera, a large volcanic depression named after the area. In Kamo, the great camphor tree at Kamo Hachiman shrine is considered the largest tree in Japan and is protected as a Special Natural Monument.
An Aira map poster combines coast and countryside in one frame. The curve of the bay and the open water give the lower part of the print a calm expanse, while the upper part fills with branching valleys and small roads. It is a quieter composition than central Kagoshima, and more varied.
