Ajim sits on the southwestern edge of Djerba, where the island reaches closest to the mainland. From above, the town is a loose cluster of low blocks and courtyard houses spread along a flat shoreline. Toward the water, the grid breaks into quays, a ferry landing and the shallow shapes of the lagoon. Inland, roads fan out across open ground toward the rest of the island.
The ferry crossing is what defines Ajim on a map. A short line of water runs across the strait to the mainland, and the roads converge on the landing like tributaries. Fishing has shaped the harbour for a long time, and the town is known for its sponge divers. Their boats still work the shallow waters of the Gulf of Gabès.
Film fans may know the whitewashed streets from the first Star Wars film. Scenes set in the desert port of Mos Eisley were shot here.
