Al ‘Āshir min Ramaḑān, known in English as Tenth of Ramadan City, was founded in the late 1970s as one of Egypt's first new towns. It was built in the desert to draw industry and housing away from crowded Cairo. The name recalls the date in the Islamic calendar on which the October War of 1973 began. The whole city was planned before building started, and the map shows it clearly.
From above, the city is divided into distinct districts, each with its own street network and service centre, separated by wide roads and open land. Large industrial zones occupy their own sectors, and their long factory buildings form a coarser grid than the residential areas. The pattern is orderly and repetitive, closer to an engineering drawing than to a historic town.
