Al Fayyum lies in a broad depression in the Western Desert, southwest of Cairo. The ancient Bahr Yussef canal carries water from the Nile into the basin. The city stands near the head of this fertile basin, and from above it appears as a dense cluster of streets surrounded by fields and a spreading web of irrigation channels that fan out toward the lowlands.
The Bahr Yussef runs straight through the city centre. Its banks are known for traditional water wheels, the wooden norias that have long lifted water into the channels. To the north the land slopes down to Lake Qarun, a large saline lake at the bottom of the depression. Beyond the fields, the edge of the desert is sharp and clear.
People have lived here since antiquity. The city grew on the site of Shedet, which the Greeks called Crocodilopolis, and the region gave its name to the painted Fayum mummy portraits of the Roman period.
