Alfeld lies in southern Lower Saxony, in the valley of the Leine river. Wooded ranges rise on both sides. On a map, the town stretches along the valley floor. The river winds through meadows, and the railway runs parallel to it. The old town is compact, with irregular streets, and later districts fill the valley and climb the lower slopes.
Alfeld is best known for the Fagus Factory, which Walter Gropius designed from 1911 onward. It is widely considered one of the first buildings of modern architecture, and it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011. It stands next to the railway line on the western edge of town, and its long, rectangular plan is easy to pick out on a detailed map.
