Alice Springs, known to its Arrernte traditional owners as Mparntwe, sits almost exactly in the centre of Australia. The town lies in a basin on the north side of the MacDonnell Ranges, and its most important geographic feature is a gap in them. At Heavitree Gap, the Todd River, the road and the railway all squeeze through the ridge together.
The Todd itself is a wide, sandy channel that is dry for most of the year. It runs through the middle of town, past the compact grid of the centre, and Anzac Hill rises just north of the central streets. Suburbs spread in curving loops toward the ranges, and the Stuart Highway passes through on its long route between Darwin and Adelaide.
The town began as a station on the Overland Telegraph Line in the 1870s, and The Ghan railway still stops here. Every year the Henley-on-Todd Regatta holds boat races on the dry riverbed, with crews running inside bottomless boats. A broad sandy channel winds through the centre. It is drawn as a soft band, crossed by causeways and bridges that rarely see flowing water.
