Alzey lies in the heart of Rheinhessen, Germany's largest wine-growing region, in a gentle valley surrounded by vineyards and fields. From above, the old town is a small, irregular core of lanes around the market square and castle, bordered by later districts that spread outward in several directions. The land around it forms a patchwork of vineyard rows and farm parcels.
Tradition links the town to Volker von Alzey, the minstrel-knight of the Nibelungenlied, and it still calls itself the Volkerstadt. Its castle, rebuilt many times over the centuries, stands at the edge of the historic centre. Alzey also has deep roots as a wine town, and the region's viticulture shapes its economy and calendar.
Roads and motorways approach from all sides, including the nearby junction of the A61 and A63, while the small river Selz passes through the valley.
