Amiens lies in the valley of the Somme, which splits into several channels as it flows through the city. On a map, the northern part of the centre is laced with waterways, especially in the old Saint-Leu quarter. To the east lie the hortillonnages, a large area of market gardens on small islands separated by canals.
The Cathedral of Notre-Dame of Amiens, begun in the thirteenth century, is the largest Gothic cathedral in France by interior volume, and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Amiens is also where Jules Verne lived for much of his life, and his house is now a museum. Wide boulevards follow the line of the old fortifications around the centre.
