Anfu lies in the Rongchang area of western Chongqing, in the rolling hill country of the Sichuan Basin. The landscape here is a patchwork of low hills, small valleys and terraced fields. From above, the town's streets follow the valleys and the gentler ground, with the older centre giving way to newer blocks along the main roads.
Anfu is best known for its pottery. Rongchang ware, produced in and around the town for centuries, is counted among China's well-known pottery traditions, and workshops remain part of local life. The surrounding countryside is typical of the basin, with dense agricultural settlement spread across the hills rather than concentrated in a single core.
