Ann sits on the inland side of Rakhine State, away from the coast, in country dominated by the forested ridges of the Arakan Mountains. From above, the town is a small cluster of streets set in a valley, with the surrounding land folded into ridges and river channels that determine where anything can be built.
The town has long mattered as a crossing point. The road through Ann climbs over the mountains to link Rakhine with the Irrawaddy basin, and on a map it appears as a winding line leaving town and twisting through the hills. It is one of the few overland routes across this part of the range.
An Ann map poster is necessarily a quiet one. There is no dense grid or long waterfront, only a compact settlement, a few main streets and the roads that lead out through difficult terrain. In black and white, the curves of those roads and the shape of the valley become the main subject of the print.
