Ans lies immediately west of Liège, on the plateau above the Meuse valley. On a map it reads as a continuation of the city, a dense network of streets built during the industrial period, crossed by railway lines and bordered by major motorway junctions. There is little open space in the core, though green patches appear where former mine sites have been reclaimed.
The area's history is tied to coal. Spoil heaps, known locally as terrils, remain in the landscape and show up as rounded or irregular green shapes among the houses. The railway climbing from Liège to Ans is known for its steep incline, one of the notable gradients on the Belgian network.
Within the commune stands the Fort de Loncin, one of the ring of forts built around Liège, which was destroyed during the German attack in August 1914 and is now a memorial.
