Araçoiaba da Serra sits in the interior of São Paulo state, a short distance west of Sorocaba. On a map, its compact centre breaks into streets that follow the lie of the land, while outlying neighbourhoods and country properties scatter along rural roads. The word serra in the name refers to the Araçoiaba hill, a forested rise that stands out against the surrounding farmland and is closely tied to the region's past.
