Aranuka is an atoll in the Gilbert Islands of Kiribati, lying only a short distance north of the equator. On a map it appears as a loose ring of low land enclosing a lagoon, with reef edges marking where the ocean meets the shallows. The islets are narrow, so land and water are never far apart anywhere in the drawing.
Villages sit along the lagoon side of the islets, where the water is calmer, and a simple road or track follows the land between them. Coconut palms cover much of the ground, which from above gives the rim a uniform texture rather than a pattern of fields or blocks.
Aranuka is part of the central Gilberts, close to the atolls of Kuria and Abemama.
