Archway is a district of north London in the borough of Islington, centred on the junction where Holloway Road, Highgate Hill and Archway Road meet. On a map the area is a dense mesh of Victorian terraces, crescents and small squares, rising steeply toward Highgate to the north. Highgate Cemetery and the edge of Hampstead Heath lie just to the west, adding large green shapes to the frame.
The area takes its name from the archway built in the early nineteenth century to carry Hornsey Lane over the new road cut through the hill. It was later replaced by the iron bridge that still stands today. Nearby, a stone on Highgate Hill marks the spot where, according to legend, Dick Whittington heard the bells calling him back to London.
