Arezzo sits on a hillside in eastern Tuscany, above the broad valley where the Chiana and Arno meet. The historic centre climbs from the lower town to the Medici fortress and the cathedral at the top. From above, the old streets follow the slope in a fan-like pattern, while newer districts spread out on flatter land below.
The city has a long cultural history. It was an important Etruscan centre, and the bronze Chimera of Arezzo was found here. Petrarch and Giorgio Vasari were born in the city, and the Basilica of San Francesco holds Piero della Francesca's fresco cycle of the Legend of the True Cross.
