Arfoud sits in the Tafilalt, the large date-palm oasis of southeastern Morocco watered by the Ziz River. The town was laid out as a French garrison post in the early twentieth century, and it still looks planned from above. Wide, straight streets form a grid, which stands out against the irregular green of the palm groves and the stony desert beyond.
It is well known as a starting point for trips to the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga, and as a centre for fossils. Ammonites and trilobites from the surrounding rock are cut and polished in local workshops. The town also holds a date festival that celebrates the harvest from the oasis.

The date palms of the Tafilalt surround the town along the Ziz valley. The irrigated land shows up as irregular shapes against the planned streets.
Road to the dunes
The route south toward Erzouga and Erg Chebbi leaves the town into open desert, a single line leading out of the frame toward the sand sea.
