Armant lies on the west bank of the Nile in Upper Egypt, a short distance south of Luxor. From above, it follows the classic pattern of the valley: a strip of dense streets beside the river, then a wide green band of irrigated fields and canals, and finally an abrupt line where cultivation stops and the desert begins.
The town occupies the site of ancient Hermonthis, a centre of worship of the war god Montu. The nearby Bucheum was the burial place of the sacred Buchis bulls. Today the area is largely agricultural, with sugar cane covering much of the land, and the local sugar factory has long been one of the town's main employers.
