Arsk is a district centre in Tatarstan, lying northeast of Kazan on the upper reaches of the Kazanka river. From above it looks like many towns of the middle Volga region: a modest centre of administrative and commercial streets, rows of single-storey houses on straight lanes, and fields that come right up to the edge of town on most sides.
The river gives the map its one flowing line, winding past the town with a band of lower ground alongside it. The name is old; Arsk appears in the history of the Kazan Khanate, and the land around it has long been Tatar farming country. The district is also associated with the poet Gabdulla Tukay, who spent part of his childhood nearby.
