Arucas sits on the northern slopes of Gran Canaria, a few kilometres inland from the Atlantic coast. Its compact historic centre has narrow streets packed around a central church, and the town is overlooked by the Montaña de Arucas, a volcanic cone whose summit gives wide views to the sea. Around it, terraced plantations and ravines break up the land.
The town is best known for the Church of San Juan Bautista, a neo-Gothic building of dark volcanic stone that towers over the surrounding rooftops. Arucas is also associated with banana growing and with the Arehucas rum distillery, one of the island's best-known producers.
