Arusha lies on the lower southern slopes of Mount Meru, in northern Tanzania. The town is built on rising ground, and several rivers, including the Themi and Naura, run south through it in small valleys. On a map, these streams break up the street network and give the town a patchwork of neighbourhoods separated by green strips.
The central area is compact, with a clock tower that local tradition holds to be halfway between Cairo and Cape Town. Roads leave the centre in different directions, toward Moshi and Kilimanjaro to the east, and toward the Serengeti and Ngorongoro to the west. For many visitors, this is where a safari starts.
Arusha also has a strong political history. The Arusha Declaration of 1967 set out Tanzania's policy direction after independence, and the town is home to the headquarters of the East African Community.
