Asahi lies on the Pacific coast of north-eastern Chiba Prefecture, between Chōshi and the long curve of Kujūkuri Beach. The land is low and open, and on a map the city appears as a series of settlements along roads and rail, surrounded by large, regular blocks of farmland, with a smooth coastline forming its southern edge.
Much of the inland area was once a lagoon known as Tsubaki-no-umi, drained in the Edo period to create rice fields, which explains the unusually orderly field pattern. The coastal district of Iioka, part of Asahi since a 2005 merger, marks the northern end of Kujūkuri Beach and was hit hard by the tsunami of 2011.
