Åsane forms the northern part of Bergen on Norway's west coast. It is a district shaped by terrain. Residential neighbourhoods fill the valleys and lower slopes, forested hills rise between them, and the edges run down to fjord water on the west and north. On a map, the built-up areas look like islands of streets separated by stretches of steep, green ground.
Åsane was a municipality in its own right until 1972, when it was merged into Bergen. Since then it has grown into one of the city's largest boroughs. It is home to a major shopping centre and several residential districts linked by the E39 highway, which runs north through the area toward the coast.
