Ashburn has no single old centre. From above it reads as a patchwork of planned communities, each with its own loops of residential streets, ponds and golf fairways, stitched together by wide arterial roads. The pattern is typical of fast-growing northern Virginia, where former fields became neighbourhoods in a few decades.
The strongest lines on the map are infrastructure. Route 7 runs along the north, the Dulles Greenway crosses the south, and the straight corridor of the Washington and Old Dominion Trail follows an old railway bed through the middle.
