Ashmūn lies in Monufia Governorate, near the southern tip of the Nile Delta. It is close to where the river splits into its Rosetta and Damietta branches, with the Rosetta branch passing to the west. From above, the town is a dense cluster of narrow streets and closely built blocks, and it is surrounded almost entirely by farmland.
The land around it is some of the most intensively farmed in Egypt. Small fields are divided by irrigation canals, drains and raised paths, and villages sit at regular intervals across the plain. Roads and waterways often run side by side, forming long lines that link the town with its neighbours.
