Asker lies just west of Oslo in Akershus county, and its map is dominated by water. The inner Oslofjord cuts into the municipality in a series of bays, sounds and small islands. Behind the shoreline, low wooded ridges and lakes break up the land. Asker's town centre sits beside the railway, with residential areas scattered over the hills around it and linked by winding roads.
In 2020 Asker merged with the neighbouring municipalities of Røyken and Hurum, so it now reaches far down the Hurum peninsula between the Oslofjord and the Drammensfjord. The municipality is also home to Skaugum, the residence of Norway's crown prince and his family. The mix of fjord shore, forest and commuter settlement gives the area a very varied map.

Railway spine
The main railway runs through Asker's centre towards Oslo and Drammen. Station areas form small, dense nodes within otherwise low, spread-out housing.
Lakes and ridges
Inland, lakes such as Semsvannet sit among forested hills. They leave open, unbuilt areas that give the composition space and contrast.
