Ath lies in the province of Hainaut, in western Wallonia, where two branches of the Dender river meet and continue northward as a canalised waterway. On a map the river and its locks make a strong, measured line along the town. The historic centre gathers nearby in a compact, roughly oval shape around the Grand-Place.
The town is best known for its Ducasse, held in late August, when giant figures including Goliath parade through the streets. The festival is part of the processional giants of Belgium and France listed by UNESCO as intangible heritage. The medieval Burbant Tower, a squat keep near the centre, is one of the oldest buildings in the town.
