Atsugi lies in central Kanagawa, on the western edge of the Kanto Plain, and its map shows a clear transition from lowland to mountain. The Sagami River runs along the eastern side of the city, a wide channel with broad gravel banks. The dense centre around Hon-Atsugi Station sits close to the river, and to the west the land rises toward the forested ridges of the Tanzawa range.
Atsugi has long been a crossroads. The Tomei Expressway and several national roads pass through, and the Odakyu line links it to Shinjuku. Many people know the name from Naval Air Facility Atsugi, but the airfield is actually located in the neighbouring cities of Yamato and Ayase, not in Atsugi itself.
