Aurillac is the prefecture of Cantal, in the Auvergne, set in a valley at the edge of the ancient volcanic uplands. The Jordanne river flows through the town from the northeast, and the map follows its course: the old centre sits on the river's right bank, compact and irregular, below the Château Saint-Étienne on its rocky height.
The town is known as the birthplace of Gerbert d'Aurillac, who became Pope Sylvester II around the year 1000. Every August it hosts one of Europe's largest street-theatre festivals, filling its squares and lanes. Aurillac has also long been associated with the making of umbrellas.
