Avignon is one of the few French cities to have kept its medieval walls almost complete, and they are the first thing that stands out on the map. The ramparts form an irregular ring around the old town, with the Rhône running along the north side and newer districts spreading beyond the walls to the south and east.
In the fourteenth century, the popes lived in Avignon, and the Palais des Papes still dominates the northern part of the old town, next to the Rocher des Doms garden overlooking the river. The Pont Saint-Bénezet, the bridge from the famous song, reaches partway into the Rhône and stops, with only four of its arches left.
An Avignon map poster frames all of this: the ring of walls, the tangle of medieval streets inside, the broken bridge, and the large island of Barthelasse in the Rhône. Each July, the Festival d'Avignon fills these streets with theatre, but the map stays much the same.
