Awa is a city in Tokushima Prefecture on the island of Shikoku, formed in 2005 through the merger of several towns. The map shows a long strip of settlement on the northern side of the Yoshino River valley, with the Sanuki mountains rising along the northern edge and the river running broadly to the south.
The land between mountains and river is flat and cultivated, crossed by roads that run east to west along the valley and small lanes linking scattered villages. Awa is known for the Awa no Dochu, a formation of eroded earth pillars on the mountain slopes, designated a natural monument of Japan.
