Bad Reichenhall sits in the far southeast of Bavaria, close to the Austrian border and a short distance from Salzburg. The Saalach river runs along the town's western side, and mountains rise steeply around it, so the built-up area fills a valley floor that is roughly oval. On the map, the streets stop abruptly wherever the slopes begin.
Salt shaped this town. For centuries brine from local springs was processed here, and the historic salt works, the Alte Saline, is still one of its best-known sights. The spa tradition grew out of the same springs. Above the town, the Predigtstuhl cable car, opened in 1928, climbs to a summit viewpoint and still runs in its original form.
