Bago, long known in English as Pegu, lies on the river of the same name northeast of Yangon. The land around it is flat and low. On a map, the Bago River winds through the town, and the main road and railway to Yangon cut across it. The town's streets fill the gaps between large religious compounds.
For centuries this was the capital of the Mon kingdom of Hanthawaddy, and those years are still visible in the town. The Shwemawdaw Pagoda has one of the tallest stupas in Myanmar. The Shwethalyaung, a huge reclining Buddha, lies a short distance to the west. Traces of the old palace grounds and moat still show in the layout.
