Baidi lies in Fengjie County in the northeast of Chongqing Municipality, at the western entrance to the Three Gorges of the Yangtze. Here the river turns from a broad valley into the narrow Qutang Gorge, and the map records that change dramatically: wide water upstream, then a sudden pinch between steep mountains.
The town is built on the slopes above the river, its streets climbing in terraces and switchbacks rather than following a grid. Since the Three Gorges Dam raised the water level, the Yangtze here has become wider and calmer, turning Baidicheng, the old White Emperor City, into a small island linked to the shore by a bridge.
A Baidi map poster brings together terrain, river and a long literary tradition. The White Emperor City appears in Li Bai's famous poem about leaving Baidi at dawn, and the Kuimen gate of Qutang Gorge is pictured on the ten-yuan banknote.
