Bais lies on the eastern coast of Negros Island in Negros Oriental, facing the Tañon Strait, which separates Negros from Cebu. The coastline is anything but straight. Shallow bays, tidal flats and mangrove-lined inlets cut into the land, and from above the boundary between water and shore looks ragged and detailed, especially to the north and south of the town centre.
For a long time the city's economy has depended on sugar. The flat land behind the coast is laid out in large cane fields, crossed by straight farm roads. The historic sugar central gave the town much of its twentieth-century identity. On a Bais map poster, the compact downtown grid near the waterfront looks especially clean against the broad agricultural land behind it.
Bais is also known as a starting point for dolphin and whale watching in the Tañon Strait, a protected seascape. Boats leave from the bay heading out into open water.
