Banff is a small town inside a national park, and the map makes the boundary plain. A neat grid of streets lies along the Bow River, with Banff Avenue running straight through the centre toward the Trans-Canada Highway to the north. Around it the land is mostly unbuilt: wetlands, forest and the lower slopes of mountains that rise directly from the valley floor.
Banff National Park, established in 1885 after hot springs were found on Sulphur Mountain, is the oldest national park in Canada. The Canadian Pacific Railway built the Banff Springs Hotel above the river soon afterwards to bring in visitors. Three ski areas lie within the park: Mount Norquay just above the town, and Sunshine Village and Lake Louise further along the valley.
A Banff map poster shows a town defined by its setting: the Bow River curving past on its way to Bow Falls, the Vermilion Lakes to the west, and the switchbacks of roads climbing toward Norquay and the hot springs. It is a compact, orderly map held within a much larger and wilder frame.

The river curves along the southern edge of downtown and drops over Bow Falls near the Banff Springs Hotel, giving the map its strongest natural line.

West of the town a series of shallow lakes and wetlands spreads across the valley floor, a scatter of irregular shapes between the townsite and the highway.
