Bangor sits on the north coast of Wales where the mainland faces Anglesey across the Menai Strait. On a map, the city occupies a narrow valley and the ridges around it. The high street runs along the valley floor, one of the longest in Wales, and residential streets climb the slopes on either side toward the university and the hills.
Bangor is among the smallest cities in Britain, yet it holds one of the oldest continuously used cathedral sites in the country. The monastic foundation of Saint Deiniol dates back to the sixth century. Bangor University, whose main building overlooks the town, gives the city much of its present character, and student housing fills many of the upper streets.
