Barbosa lies in the south of Santander, Colombia, in a mountain valley along the Suárez River. On a map, the town has the typical form of an Andean settlement. There is a regular grid of blocks around a central plaza, fitted onto the flatter ground near the river. Around it, the land climbs steeply, and the roads twist as they head into the hills.
The town is a market and transport hub for the surrounding farming region, which is known for sugar cane, fruit and the guava sweets associated with this part of Santander and neighbouring Boyacá. Its roads link the valley with Tunja to the south and with the rest of Santander, so Barbosa is a regular stop on regional routes.
