Bargny lies on the Atlantic coast just east of Rufisque, at the outer edge of the greater Dakar area. The town is laid out along the shore, and its densest quarters sit close to the beach, where fishing boats are drawn up on the sand. From above, the coastline forms a long, clean edge, and the streets are packed tightly behind it.
Fishing has long been central to life in Bargny, and the town is known for its fish processing, done by hand near the shore. In recent years the coast here has been under pressure from erosion and large industrial projects nearby, and those changes have become part of the town's story.
