Bārh lies in Patna district of Bihar, on the southern bank of the Ganges downstream of Patna. The river sets the town's shape. Streets run parallel to the water in a long, narrow band, and lanes lead down toward the riverfront. North of the channel, the wide floodplain and the braided sandbanks of the Ganges fill a large part of the frame.
The main railway line between Patna and Mokama runs through the town, roughly parallel to the river, and it forms a second spine. Between track and water, older lanes crowd together. To the south, the dense pattern thins out into farmland on the flat Gangetic plain.
