Barreirinha lies in the state of Amazonas, on the Paraná do Ramos, a side channel within the vast river system of the lower Amazon. On a map the town forms a small, compact cluster of streets along the waterfront, with forest, lakes and seasonal floodplain surrounding it on all sides. There are no long roads leading out; boats are the main link to the rest of the region.
The town is known as the birthplace of the poet Thiago de Mello, one of Brazil's most celebrated twentieth-century writers, whose work often returned to the rivers and forest of the Amazon. Barreirinha's life is closely tied to the rhythm of the water, which rises and falls with the seasons.
