Batié is the capital of Noumbiel Province in the Sud-Ouest region of Burkina Faso, close to the borders with Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. On a map it is a modest centre where a handful of main roads meet near the middle, surrounded by compounds and open savanna. The layout is loose, with plenty of space between blocks and around public buildings.
Beyond the centre the network quickly becomes tracks leading to villages and fields, drawn as thin lines across wide empty ground. Seasonal streams and wooded areas break the land into irregular pieces. The roads toward the frontier regions make the town feel like a junction at the far corner of the country.
