Beihai sits on a peninsula at the southern tip of Guangxi, pointing west into the Gulf of Tonkin. The sea surrounds the city on the north, west and south, so on a map the street grid ends at the coastline almost everywhere you look. The old town faces the northern harbour, and newer districts spread east and south toward long, straight beaches.
The city opened to foreign trade under an 1876 treaty. The arcaded shophouses of Zhuhai Road, whose colonnaded ground floors shade pedestrians, still line the historic waterfront. To the south, Silver Beach runs along the shore for kilometres. Weizhou Island, a volcanic island, lies well offshore and shows as a small, compact shape when the frame is drawn wide enough.
