Belluno occupies a raised spur above the confluence of the Piave and the Ardo stream, in the north of Veneto. On the map, the historic centre is a compact, elongated shape pressed onto that high ground, with the valley falling away on either side. The position explains much of the city's form: streets run along the ridge, and routes descend to the water at the edges.
Within the old town, Piazza dei Martiri and Piazza del Duomo, with the Palazzo dei Rettori from the period of Venetian rule, form the main public spaces. Outside the centre, newer districts spread across the valley floor and the lower slopes, following the broad course of the Piave as it continues through the valley toward the plain.
North of the city rise the mountains of the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park, and Belluno is often used as a starting point for walks and climbs in the park.
