Benfica is a parish on the western side of Lisbon, where the dense city begins to give way to the municipalities beyond. To the south it borders Monsanto, the large wooded park on the hills above the city, and on the map that green mass sits right next to the residential streets. To the west the built-up area runs on without a clear break into neighbouring Amadora.
The Estrada de Benfica, an old route out of the city, runs through the district and still acts as its main street. The Sintra railway line crosses Benfica with a station of its own, adding a strong straight line to the map. The name is known far beyond Lisbon because it was adopted by one of Portugal's most famous football clubs.
