Panjang Beach
The name simply means long beach, and the map shows why: an uninterrupted strip of sand running for kilometres along the city's western edge.

Bengkulu Map Poster & Print
Bengkulu faces the Indian Ocean on the western coast of Sumatra, with the Barisan Mountains rising some distance inland. On a map the city is defined by its coastline: a long, almost straight beach running north to south, the old centre set close to the sea, and small lagoons and river mouths breaking the shore. Streets spread inland from the coast in a loose pattern across flat, low-lying ground.
From the late seventeenth century Bengkulu, then Bencoolen, was a British East India Company outpost, and Fort Marlborough, completed in the early eighteenth century, still stands near the shore. The British handed the settlement to the Dutch under the treaty of 1824. Much later, Sukarno spent several years here in exile, and it is where he met Fatmawati, who sewed Indonesia's first flag.
A Bengkulu map poster draws out the simple strength of this setting. The shoreline runs as one long clean line down the sheet, Panjang Beach stretches beside the coastal road, and the fort and old quarter sit close to the water. Inland, the street pattern gradually thins toward plantations and forest, giving the map a calm, open feel.

Fort Marlborough
The eighteenth-century British fort stands near the sea on the edge of the old centre, a compact walled shape that marks where the colonial settlement began.
Lagoons and river mouths
Small river mouths and lagoons interrupt the coast in places, adding irregular water shapes to an otherwise straight and even shoreline.
