Berbera stands on the southern shore of the Gulf of Aden in Somaliland, on a coast of dry plains and bare hills. From above, its harbour defines it: a natural anchorage sheltered by a low spit of land, with deep water close to shore. That feature has made the town a trading port for centuries.
The old quarter by the waterfront still has buildings from the Ottoman and Egyptian periods, now weathered by heat and salt. Inland, newer streets form a looser grid on flat desert ground. To the south-east the airport runway stretches to an unusual length. It was built in the Cold War era and was once listed as an emergency landing site for the Space Shuttle.
