Beringen lies in the province of Limburg in north-eastern Belgium, in the sandy, wooded Kempen region. It is made up of several parts, including the old town centre and the district of Beringen-Mijn, which grew up around a coal mine in the early twentieth century. On a map these appear as separate clusters, linked by roads across heath, woodland and farmland.
The former colliery is the town's defining landmark. Its buildings now house a mining museum and other uses under the name be-MINE.
