Bertioga stretches along the northern coast of São Paulo state, between the ocean and the forested wall of the Serra do Mar. On a map it is mostly a thin, elongated band of settlement following the beaches, with rivers and mangroves behind it and the dark mass of the mountains closing in. At its southern end, the Bertioga Channel separates it from Santo Amaro island and Guarujá.
Near the mouth of the channel stands the Forte São João, one of the oldest fortifications in Brazil, built in the colonial period to guard the passage. Today the town is better known as a beach destination for residents of São Paulo, with planned neighbourhoods such as Riviera de São Lourenço set behind the long, gently curving sand.
