Bhera stands on the left bank of the Jhelum river in Punjab, in Sargodha District. It is one of the older towns in the region, with a history reaching back many centuries, and its historic core was enclosed by walls pierced by several named gates. From above, the old town is a dense, irregular knot of lanes, clearly different from the straighter roads that grew around it.
The town was an important stop on routes across northern Punjab, and it is associated with the Mughal and pre-Mughal eras, including a mosque linked to Sher Shah Suri. Today the Motorway passes nearby, and the surrounding land is agricultural, fed by the river and canals. The Jhelum's broad, shifting channel lies close to the town.
