Bhikshāndārkovil lies on the northern outskirts of Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu, just north of the river island of Srirangam. Its name refers to a temple, and like many settlements in this region it grew around a place of worship. From above, the village streets sit amid a flat patchwork of fields fed by the Kaveri river system.
The land here is among the most intensively farmed in southern India, watered by channels drawn from the Kaveri and Kollidam. On the map these channels appear as fine lines running between rice paddies and coconut groves, while the village's streets and the roads to Tiruchirappalli form a denser, more irregular network.
